Do we use biodegradable poo bags?
The City does not use biodegradable dog waste bags. This is because:
- when the compostable bags are released into the environment as litter, the bags do not break down as designed. The bags persist in the environment and degrade into smaller pieces, which can take 12 months or more, still presenting an environmental hazard
- when compostable bags are sent to landfill, they don't break down as designed and release methane into the atmosphere
- when compostable bags are sent to an industrial composting facility, they are broken down because of optimised temperatures and microorganisms, which then release CO2, a much less harmful greenhouse gas than methane
- if/when the City does move to a FOGO system, compostable bags will definitely be considered as an option to replace the current bags.
