Do we use compostable dog poo bags?
The City does not use compostable dog waste bags. This is because:
- When compostable bags are sent to landfill, they are cut off from oxygen, moisture and aerobic bacteria, which is not the right environment for them. They will not break down as designed and will release methane into the atmosphere.
- When compostable bags are sent to an industrial composting facility, they are broken down because of optimised temperatures and microorganisms, which then release CO2, a much less harmful greenhouse gas than methane.
- When the compostable bags are released into the environment as litter, the bags do not break down as designed. The bags persist in the environment and degrade into smaller pieces, which can take 12 months or more, still presenting an environmental hazard.
- If / when the City does move to a FOGO system, compostable bags will definitely be considered as an option to replace the current bags.
